DESTINATION: Roxby DownsNestled in rich red sand dunes clad in native pine, Roxby Downs is a delightful town. A young modern mining town, it was purpose-built to house and service employees and their families of the Olympic Dam Mining project. The mine produces gold, copper, uranium oxide concentrate and silver. Main AttractionsFrom March to November, surface mine tours depart from the town centre. Bookings are essential. The town boasts a range of excellent accommodation. Retail and leisure facilities include a 3-star motel with restaurant, a tavern, modern shopping centre, bowls and golf course. Visitors are welcome at the community's leisure centre which has a swimming pool, squash court and tennis court. |

The Olympic Dam and Mining Complex is 16km north of Roxby Downs. The opal fields of Andamooka are 30km east of town and offer an easy side trip. East of Andamooka (13km) is the northern tip of Lake Torrens, a vast, normally dry salt lake that stretches south, almost all the way to Port Augusta.
