DESTINATION: Port PirieSouth Australia's first provincial city began in 1845 as a caretaker's cottage and 3 crude woolsheds on the banks of what was then known as Tarparrie Creek, on the eastern side of Spencer Gulf. Over the years, Port Pirie has grown to become one of the state's largest industrial and commercial centres; its skyline is dominated by the world's largest lead smelter. The city forms the southern point of the Spencer Gulf triangle completed by Whyalla and Port Augusta. It has rail connections to the Indian Pacific and The Ghan. Main AttractionsThe city is a good base for walkers and drivers to explore the scenic southern Flinders Ranges. There is a 2hr Heritage Walk through the CBD, with many buildings of note, including Sampson's Cottage (1890s), and the National Trust Museum at the northern end of Ellen St. Memorial Park in Gertrude St is home to the Northern Festival Centre, a complex of theatre, ballroom and conference rooms. The park itself is also a popular recreation area. |

Mount Remarkable NP is a pleasant scenic drive, with a detour to Telowie Gorge revealing deep ravines and giant red-river gums. Alligator Gorge at the northern end of the park, offers a series of steps into the gorge bounded by sheer red quartzite cliffs. About 24km south of the city is the small beachside resort of Port Germein which has attractive swimming areas and a long wooden jetty, ideal for fishing and strolling along. Solomontown Beach is another great area for families, with picnic and BBQ spots and a playground.
