DESTINATION: Port Augusta

Port Augusta

The most northerly point on the Spencer Gulf, Port Augusta is often referred to as the 'Crossroads of Australia'. Major highways of the north, south, east and west meet here, and the city is an important link for the Indian Pacific and Ghan railway lines. With the Flinders Ranges to the east, Port Augusta attracts many tourists en route to this scenic outback wonderland.

Main Attractions

Beaches are popular attractions; Redbanks Beach off Gardiner Ave is especially lovely. A 2hr heritage walk and a scenic drive highlight the city's many historic buildings. Take the time to visit the Wadlata Outback Centre, an interpretative centre where audio-visuals and interactive displays trace the history of the region from its geological development, through to Aboriginal culture, European exploration, the development of transport and technological achievements. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and the School of Air both have bases in Port Augusta and visitors are welcome. The Curdnatta Art and Pottery Gallery on Commercial Rd is an outlet for weaving, pottery, painting and other local crafts. The Homestead Park Pioneer Museum is housed in the old Yudnapinna Station pine-log homestead. The city's scenic lookouts; McLellan, Whiting Pde; Water Tower, Mitchell Tce; and Flinders/Redbank in McSporan Cres provide great views to the Flinders Ranges at the top of Spencer Gulf. Nearby, on the Stuart Hwy, is the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens which exhibit Australia's most beautiful arid-land plants, birds and animal life.
