DESTINATION: PeterboroughAn historic railway town located on the main south-east approach to the Flinders Ranges, Peterborough is a popular stop for travellers en route to the ranges and especially for those interested in steam trains. There are 4 unique hand-made model steam trains located at each of the 4 entrances to the town. Surrounded by grain-growing and pastoral country, Peterborough is the main service town on the Port Pirie to Broken Hill railway line. Main AttractionsAn easy way to see the main attractions is on the guided bus tour, which leaves from Peterborough Caravan Park. The Gold Battery has been crushing ore for small mines in the region for over 100 years and is still operational. Iven Ley's Museum, in Queen St, is a small museum featuring bottle and mineral collections, memorabilia and a superb display of dolls. Ranns Museum in Moscow St specialises in working and non-working stationary engines and other artefacts dating to the 1800s. Both museums are generally open daily. The Steamtown Museum holds memorabilia in the old railway workshops and is a must for steam train enthusiasts. In Callary St, St Cecilia is a 20-room restored mansion with a 2-storey coach house. The house is now a private hotel that specialises in Murder Mystery weekends. |
