Naracoorte

Around 330km from Adelaide, Naracoorte is at the geographical heart of the Limestone Coast region. Settled in the 1840s, the area is famous for its World Heritage-listed and fossil-filled limestone caves. Primary industries include sheep, beef cattle, grains and vineyards. The name 'Naracoorte' is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning 'running water'.

The Museum and Snake Pit, in Jenkins Tce, houses a collection of snakes and artefacts. For woollen products and history, explore the Sheep's Back Wool Museum and the Mini Jumbuck Factory. For walks, swimming and picnicking visit Jubilee Park, off Park Tce.

Naracoorte Caves NP is 12km SE of Naracoorte. The national park was listed in 1994 as a World Heritage site for its extensive fossil deposits. The Wonambi Fossil Centre has life-like moving models of extinct animals, and the Bat Cave Teleview Centre allows visitors to view the inside of a Bat Cave via infrared cameras. The nearby Heathfield Ridge Winery offers guided tours while the wine regions of Coonawarra, Padthaway and Wrattonbully are all close to Naracoorte.
