DESTINATION: Morgan

Morgan

In its heyday Morgan was briefly one of the busiest river ports on the Murray-Darling river system, where paddlesteamers met the railway line to Adelaide. Now that the railway line is closed and river traffic is reduced to houseboats and water-skiers, Morgan is a much quieter place. The township is a service centre for the local wine, sheep and fruit growing industries as well as catering for the holiday-home community by the Murray.

Main Attractions

A self-guided walking trail covers the town's historic sites, mainly clustered around the Railway Station and the remains of the old jarrah wharf. Maps are available as well as audio commentary on the area. The Port of Morgan Museum is housed in the old Railway Station and displays a paddlesteamer, old engines and a range of memorabilia. Picnic and BBQ facilities are located on the riverfront lawn next to the museum. Remember to stroll along Railway Tce where a charming row of 1880s shops, Carmine's Antiques and 2 pubs are located.

Nearby attractions

Morgan CP is located on the other side of the river where rough riverbank camping and fishing are the main attractions. Only 1km from the town on the Blanchetown Rd, there is a fossil quarry where fossickers will often find fossil shells and very occasionally a shark's tooth. White Dam CP is 9km NW of town, and the Nor-West Bend Private Museum is 8km east and has a very large collection of horse-drawn vehicles and buggies.

Region: Riverland

Riverland produces close to half of South Australia's wine grapes and is becoming increasingly known as a wine area in its own right.
