DESTINATION: LyndochLocated on the south-west edge of the Barossa Valley, Lyndoch is the first of the Barossa towns to be reached by most visitors; it is only 1hr from Adelaide. Lyndoch is named after Lord Lynedoch, a friend of Colonel Light who carried out the first survey of the valley. Settlers arrived in 1839, and vineyards as well as farms were established in the early years, but the first winery, in a converted flour mill, was not operational until 1896. Main AttractionsLyndoch Recreation Park has picnic facilities, toilets and a children's playground. The Stone Mill Wheel (1855) and other locally quarried ironstone buildings from the mid-1800s can be viewed on the self-guided historical walk. Kies Family Wines, on the Barossa Valley Hwy 1km from town, has cellar door sales and functions as the local tourist information centre. |

Wineries of all sizes dot the hills around Lyndoch, most being family owned. Among the many wineries is Yaldara Wines, one of the largest in the Barossa. Other well-known wineries include Twin Valley Estate, Miranda Wines, Orlando Wines, Wards Gateway Cellar and Burge Family Winemakers. Around 8km south of town is the Barossa Reservoir with its Whispering Wall, which has an amazing acoustic effect; words whispered at one end of the wall are carried to the other end over 100m away and are clearly audible. In Para Wirra Recreation Park explore the old Barossa Goldfields. About 7km SE of the town, Lyndoch Lavender Farm grows more than 50 lavender varieties and produces excellent olive oil in beautiful peaceful surroundings.
