DESTINATION: Loxton

Loxton

Loxton is a lovely little 'garden town' in the Riverland region. It is one of the area's most prosperous centres. Located on the south bank of the Murray River and surrounded by vineyards, fruit orchards and olive groves, the town was proclaimed in 1907 and has grown significantly since. The post-WWII Soldier Settlement Scheme contributed to the town's growth.

Main Attractions

The river provides opportunities for many recreational activities including camping, fishing, swimming, cruising, waterskiing and canoeing. Loxton Historical Village is an award-winning attraction of 30 fully furnished buildings on the riverfront. Art galleries and craft shops are in abundance, and the town's Heritage Walk is definitely worth the effort.

Region: Riverland

Riverland produces close to half of South Australia's wine grapes and is becoming increasingly known as a wine area in its own right. Riverland is the heart of the fruit bowl of South Australia, where more than 90% of the state's citrus, stone fruit and nuts are grown; local produce can be sampled from stalls along the roadside. more
