DESTINATION: Kimba

Kimba

The township of Kimba promotes itself as the place 'halfway across Australia', although this is not entirely accurate. The town was proclaimed in 1914, after mallee was cleared to make way for the planting of wheat. Before then, huge sheep and cattle properties, established by settlers in the 1870s, occupied the land.

Main Attractions

The Halfway Across Australia Gem Shop is identified by a 8m-high pink and grey galah, an attraction that provides tourist information as well as natural and cut rocks, gemstones, gifts and souvenirs. The main street of town, High St, is lined with good shops and cafes, including the Pine 'n' Pug Gallery. Sporting facilities include a golf course, swimming pool, bowling green, tennis court, croquet lawn, sports ovals and horse and harness race tracks. Experience a Pioneer House, school and blacksmith's shop at Kimba Historical Museum.

Nearby attractions

The Gawler Ranges are not far to the north of town and can be visited in a day; take in the natural beauty and prolific birdlife of this area. However, the area must be treated as private property, so visitors should keep to the main roads and seek permission to camp or travel across the land. On the highway, 19km east of Kimba, Lake Gillies CP is a protected habitat for a variety of birdlife including mallee fowl; activities in the park are restricted to picnicking and bushwalking.
