DESTINATION: GladstoneOriginally there were 2 separate towns; Gladstone (east) and Booyoolee (west); which officially merged in 1940. In earlier times, the town was an important railway junction that serviced the surrounding rural area, but more recently it has grown as the hub of a prosperous farming and pastoral community. The silos here are South Australia's largest inland grain storage facilities, capable of holding 500 000 tonnes of grain from the region. Main AttractionsThe lovely old sandstone homes and historic gaol are favourite points of interest in town. Gladstone Gaol was built in the 1880s and is well worth visiting; the 'complete' history of the town is held within its walls; it is open daily 9am-5pm. |
