DESTINATION: Cowell

Located on Franklin Harbour, Cowell was first settled in 1853; the town was known as Flinders Lakes until 1880. Nearby Minbrie Ranges have large deposits of jade. Local industry includes jade and granite mining and processing, agriculture, and aquaculture based on oyster, snapper and kingfish farming in Franklin Harbour.

Main Attractions

Watersports are popular, including swimming, waterskiing, sailing and fishing for snapper and King George whiting. The old Post Office is home to the Franklin Harbour Historical Museum. Restored by the National Trust the museum displays old photographs, documents, books, memorabilia and geological specimens. There is an open-air Agricultural Museum on the Lincoln Hwy, and a restored Ruston Proctor steam tractor in the parklands opposite the St John's Ambulance building. With more than 40% of South Australia's oysters grown in Cowell, dining al-fresco on fresh seafood is popular.

Nearby attractions

Franklin Harbour CP is south of the town and home to great fishing, swimming and picnic spots. Both north and south of Cowell there are beaches worth visiting; Lucky Bay (16km north) and The Knob (13km south). Seals are often seen at Point Price, south of Cowell.
