DESTINATION: BeachportIn the 1830s this small coastal town was a whaling station that also serviced rural land opened up by the Henty brothers. Agriculture is still one of the district's sustaining industries but lobster fishing has taken over from whaling. Forestry, vineyards and tourism are now also important to the township. Main AttractionsThe long screw-pile jetty that juts out into Rivoli Bay is a prominent feature of the town and popular with recreational anglers. The 2 museums in town; the National Trust Museum (Railway Tce) and the Artefacts Museum (McCourt St), explore the town's whaling and Aboriginal heritage. Centenary Park, in the centre of town, is a good lunch spot with picnicking and BBQ facilities. |

To the north-west of town, the Beachport CP protects coastal vegetation and sand dunes between Lake George and the coast. The park has some interesting walking trails. Bowman Scenic Dr, commencing at the end of Foster St, reveals magnificent coastal views of rugged, weathered, limestone cliffs contrasting with secluded white sandy beaches and a profusion of native vegetation. The Pool of Siloam, located just behind the town, is a small lake claimed to have healing qualities because of its high salt content.
