DESTINATION: Lawn Hill National Park

Located 350km NW of Mount Isa, Lawn Hill NP borders the Northern Territory. Around 2820km², this national park is a haven for freshwater crocodiles which are the 'friendlier's of the two varieties. It is best to visit the park in winter and early spring as access is quite difficult, especially during the Wet season. The gravel and dirt roads are easier to navigate with 4WDs. The rugged gorges, ancient creeks and wildlife make this park a wonderland for nature lovers and explorers. Take a stroll, a hike, a canoe or inflatable boat and adventure through one of Queensland's northernmost national parks.

Tropical North Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea islands and the Great Barrier Reef to the east and the rainforest mountains that sweep down from the northernmost section of the Great Dividing Range to the west. Inland from the balmy, humid coast, the Atherton Tableland is elevated 600-900m above sea level. Known as the cool tropics, the weather is usually warm and sunny during the day, while nights are cool to cold. more
