Charters Towers

Located 132km SW of Townsville, Charters Towers is on the road and rail line to Mount Isa, in the pastoral district of the Burdekin River Valley. During the boom years of the goldrush era (1872-1916), Charters Towers was Queensland's second largest city.


Main Attractions

Charters Towers has more National Trust buildings than any other place in Queensland, and many of these buildings have been restored to their former glory. Both Gill and Mosman sts are listed as heritage precincts. National Trust buildings worthwhile visiting include Venus Gold Battery on Milchester Rd, which offers guided tours daily, and Zara Clark Folk and Military Museum on the cnr of Mossman and Mary sts. The Stock Exchange in Mosman St is now home to the National Trust and the Mining Museum.

Nearby attractions

The nearby historic gold-mining township of Ravenswood also has many National Trust buildings. White Blow Environmental Park, near Ravenswood, features a 300 million-year-old quartz-rock foundation. Towers Hill, 1.5km west, has old mine shafts and ammunition bunkers from WWII. The Mount Leyshon goldmine is 30km south and offers tours on Wednesdays.
