Atherton

Located at the heart of north Queensland's tropical Atherton Tableland, Atherton is an ideal base for exploring the region. The town is 91km SW of Cairns and is surrounded by rainforests, pasture lands and tropical crops.


Main Attractions

The Old Post Office Gallery displays and sells a variety of local art and craft works; it is also the information centre. The Chinese Joss House is situated next to the Old Post Office Gallery and stands as a reminder of the once large Chinese population in Atherton. Fascinating Facets and Crystal Caves display minerals, high quality gemstones and valuable rocks. This popular tourist spot is a combination museum, gallery and jewellery store. The basement area displays crystals and has been constructed to resemble a cave.

Nearby attractions

Hallorans Hill CP is a reminder of Atherton's volcanic past. The open eucalypt and rainforest walk (approx 1hr) winds up and around the slopes of an extinct volcano to a lookout at the summit. The reserve is a popular picnic spot. Mount Hypipamee (The Crater) NP, 26km south of Atherton, has a walking track leading to the stunning Dinner Falls.

Tropical North Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea islands and the Great Barrier Reef to the east and the rainforest mountains that sweep down from the northernmost section of the Great Dividing Range to the west. Inland from the balmy, humid coast, the Atherton Tableland is elevated 600-900m above sea level. Known as the cool tropics, the weather is usually warm and sunny during the day, while nights are cool to cold. more
