DESTINATION: Oenpelli (Gunbalanya)
Oenpelli (Gunbalanya) is an Aboriginal community located at the base of the Arnhem Land escarpment. Being part of Arnhem Land, visitors to Oenpelli require a permit from the Northern Land Council but an open day is held annually in August or September when outsiders can visit freely and enjoy cultural activities. Gunbalanya is the Aboriginal name for the Oenpelli settlement (originally a mission) approximately 300 kilometres east of Darwin and 15 kilometres east of Kakadu. Main AttractionsThe area includes the flood plains of the East Alligator River that are covered by water from December to April and a rocky sandstone plateau rising up to 200 metres above the plains. There is a well stocked arts and crafts centre in Oenpelli and local artists are renowned for their Xray style paintings. Walking tours are also available around Injalak Hill, a site extensively rich in rock art paintings. |
