DESTINATION: JabiruJabiru is on the Arnhem Hwy 80km from Darwin. The town was established after uranium mining began. It is situated on 13km of leased land in Kakadu NP. When mining ceases in the area it will be restored. Main AttractionsGagudju Crocodile Hotel is built in the shape of a crocodile, a totem of the local Gagudju people. Nearby attractions
Arnhem Hwy, the main tourist route from Darwin passes the superb waterlily-covered Fogg Dam, Window on the Wetlands display centre, Djukbinj and Mary River NPs. The many attractions of world-famous Kakadu NP are close to Jabiru, including Aboriginal rock-art sites at Nourlangie Rock and Ubirr and numerous billabongs with prolific wildlife. Bowali Visitors Centre can be reached by road or short walk. It is only 1.5km from Jabiru. Yellow Water, 55km SE, is a spectacular large billabong, where tourist cruises guarantee sightings of waterbirds and other wildlife, including crocodiles. Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre is nearby. Jim Jim and Twin Falls can be reached by a track only accessible to 4WDs, though it may be impassable after heavy monsoonal rain when the falls are at their best.
The Kakadu landscape can be viewed on scenic flights departing from Jabiru airport. There are daily tours to Ranger Uranium Mine, 6km east; and the Injalak Art and Craft Centre at Oenpelli, in nearby Arnhem Land, is worth a visit (a permit is necessary). During the Wet season (approx Nov-April), roads to Ubirr, Jim Jim and Twin Falls, Ranger Mine and Arnhem Land are usually impassable, but alternative transportation may be available to some attractions.
