DESTINATION: Howard Springs

This Darwin satellite township lies 34km to the east. The springs were Darwin's main water supply before the construction of Manton Dam.

Main Attractions

A beautiful spring-fed swimming pool, fringed by rainforest, is the central feature of Howard Springs Nature Park. A wildlife and recreation area since WWII, it has picnic sites and a kiosk.

Nearby attractions

There are several orchid farms and exotic nurseries nearby. Darwin Crocodile Farm, 18km south on the Stuart Hwy, is Australia's largest, with a population of 7000 saltwater and freshwater crocodiles and even some American alligators. Cox Peninsula Rd, further south, leads to several interesting places, such as the Berry Springs Nature Park (57km from Darwin), which offers safe swimming in a monsoon forest pool. The adjacent Territory Wildlife Park is home to Top End native wildlife in a 400ha bushland setting. To the south of Lakes Resort are Southport Siding Exotic Fruit Farm, Majestic Orchids Farm, Tumbling Waters Tourist Park and Manton Dam.

Darwin, the Territory's capital, is perched on a picturesque harbour and lies closer to Jakarta and Singapore than to Sydney and Melbourne. First settled by Europeans in 1869, when South Australian Surveyor-General Goyder arrived to establish a city in the Top End. Palmerston, as it was then known, became the terminus for the Overland Telegraph link to England, which began in 1872. more
