Hermannsburg

Home to an Aboriginal community, Hermannsburg lies 125km west of Alice Springs on the site of a Lutheran Mission; the first Aboriginal mission in the Northern Territory. It was once the home of painter Albert Namatjira for many years and while visitors are welcome they are restricted to the historic precinct, shop and petrol station.

Main Attractions

The historic precinct includes Strehlow's House (1897); the Old Manse (1888), now a gallery showcasing Aboriginal watercolours of the Hermannsburg School; mission station buildings; and a museum in the Old Colonists House (1885).
