DESTINATION: HermannsburgHome to an Aboriginal community, Hermannsburg lies 125km west of Alice Springs on the site of a Lutheran Mission; the first Aboriginal mission in the Northern Territory. It was once the home of painter Albert Namatjira for many years and while visitors are welcome they are restricted to the historic precinct, shop and petrol station. Main AttractionsThe historic precinct includes Strehlow's House (1897); the Old Manse (1888), now a gallery showcasing Aboriginal watercolours of the Hermannsburg School; mission station buildings; and a museum in the Old Colonists House (1885). |

There is a monument to the famous Aboriginal painter Albert Namatjira, 2km east on Larapinta Dr. Aboriginal cultural tours are available at the Wallace Rockhole community, 46km SE. Finke Gorge NP is 20km south. The park features many rare plants unique to the area including red fan palms (Livistona mariae) in Palm Valley and extraordinary rock formations; 4WD country. Tnorala (Gosse Bluff) meteorite crater is 35km west, with a Mereenie Loop Pass required for access (available at Hermannsburg petrol station).
