DESTINATION: WellingtonWellington is located at the junction of the Macquarie and Bell rivers. This Central West town services the surrounding agricultural and pastoral district. Main AttractionsCameron Park occupies one side of the main street of Wellington. The Bell River flows through the park past picnic areas, a sunken garden and interesting landscaping. Brochures on the historic town walk are available from the information centre and there is also a cycleway that runs through the local streets and along the highway to Wellington Caves. |

Wellington Caves, 9km south of the town, have been a popular tourist destination for many years. In 1826, the Cathedral Cave was painted by the travelling artist Augustus Earle, and in 1830, fossilised bones were discovered in the caves. Guided tours operate daily to the Cathedral and Gaden caves. There is also a phosphate mine located here. Holiday lodges and a caravan park form part of the caves complex. Bakers Swamp Gallery is a 100-year-old limestone house and is the home and studio of artist William O'Shea. The gallery is open daily 10am-5pm. Lake Burrendong is three-and-a-half times the surface area of Sydney Harbour. There are 2 small state parks on the western foreshore of the lake. Activities available include fishing and golf. Camping and caravanning is permitted. There are also cabins and a kiosk.
