DESTINATION: Wauchope

Wauchope

A timber town at the centre of the prosperous Hastings River dairying and cattle-raising region, Wauchope is 19km SW of Port Macquarie.

Main Attractions

Timbertown, a working replica of a 19th-century village, is the main tourist attraction. Demonstrations of traditional skills, such as shingle-splitting and wood-turning, and a steam locomotive, steam sawmill and bullock team bring the village to life. Timbertown is open daily, 9.30am-3.30pm. The Hastings River provides a venue for swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, jet-skiing and waterskiing.

Picnic spots and well-maintained recreation areas can be found in the state forests that surround Wauchope. Port Macquarie's hinterland is worthwhile visiting. The area is surrounded by valleys, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, eucalypt forests, rainforests and a number of excellent national parks. Wildlife includes wedge-tailed eagles, parrots, koalas, wallabies and platypus in the waterholes.
