DESTINATION: Wagga WaggaThe largest inland city in New South Wales, Wagga Wagga is known as the 'Garden City of the South'. It is a university city and the commercial centre of the Riverina district which is devoted to wheat, lambs, dairying and mixed farming. The town's growth as a regional centre was assured by its position on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, almost halfway between Sydney and Melbourne just off the Hume Hwy. Main AttractionsThere are 3 Historic Buildings' Walks, varying in length from 40mins to 2hrs. Other attractions include Charles Sturt University winery and cheese factory, RAAF Museum, and the Australian Army Base and peace chapel at Kapooka. The Wagga Wagga Regional Art Gallery houses the superb National Art Glass Collection. Many public sculptures by notable local artists have been installed throughout the town centre. The Botanic Gardens includes a zoo, model trains, free-flight aviary and walking trails. The town hosts many events throughout the year covering fashion, jazz, horse racing, antiques, sports and gardens. Wagga Wagga has been home to many sporting champions, including Mark Taylor, Tony Roche, Steve Elkington, Wayne Carey and Paul Kelly. |
