With lakes to the west, the Tasman Sea to the east and national parks both north and south, this Central Coast town is an ideal location for boaties, fishermen and nature lovers. Toukley faces the narrow strip of land that separates Tuggerah and Budgewoi lakes. Both lakes offer excellent fishing, swimming, safe boating and windsurfing. Munmorah SRA is north of Toukley. The area edges Lake Munmorah and the Tasman Sea and encompasses many small beaches. It is worthwhile visiting in spring to see the wildflowers. There are 2 lookouts, both accessed by road. Close to town are many picnic areas: at Canton Beach, facing Tuggerah Lake; at Osborne Park, in Peel St; and in Toukley Gardens, facing Budgewoi Lake. Edward Hargraves, the first man to discover payable gold in Australia, built his all-cedar house in the 1860s. The house, in Elizabeth Dr, Noraville, still stands and can be seen from the road.

Close proximity to Sydney and easy accessibility via fast freeways has ensured the Central Coast's development as a prime holiday destination. Characterised by large, calm saltwater lagoons, connected to the ocean via a number of small waterways, with an array of excellent beaches on the coastline, this area is a haven for watersports. Swimming, fishing and surfing opportunities abound, charter cruises and hire boats are available on all major bodies of water, and it is also possible to rent a houseboat on Lake Macquarie, the region's largest lake. more
