DESTINATION: Nelson BayLocated on Port Stephens, 60km north of Newcastle on the Mid- North Coast, the resort town of Nelson Bay is the main centre on the Tomaree Peninsula. The region's commercial centre, Nelson Bay is a pretty town of gardens and galleries and home to the Port Stephens fishing fleet. Main AttractionsNelson Bay has dolphin- and whale-watching cruises and fishing charters. Cruises also visit Broughton Island, Myall River and Lakes. Game fishing is especially good in the area and there are several major competitions held throughout the year. The Heritage Trust-listed Inner Lighthouse at Little Beach has heritage displays and a maritime museum. It also has alfresco dining with great views. Toboggan Hill Park on Salamander Way has a 700m slope and also offers mini-golf, Krazy cars, canoe rides and indoor rockclimbing. |

Nearby attractions
The nearby townships of Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Anna Bay, Salamander Bay and Soldiers Point provide a wide range of accommodation and activities year round. While most of the action is centred on Port Stephens, there are many other activities available, including 4WD tours, golf courses, beach and bush horseriding, camel riding, cycleways and tennis courts. The Tomaree NP is a good place to explore. The area is also noted for its colonies of koalas. The Native Flora Grand Walk at Fly Point has 15 vantage points to enjoy the wildflowers and views.
