DESTINATION: Mudgee
Located 264km NW of Sydney, on the Cudgegong River, is the picturesque country town of Mudgee. The scenic landscape has attracted many artists to the region. Main AttractionsMudgee is at the centre of one of the premium wine-growing areas of Australia. The wine industry dates back to the 1850s. The region is credited with introducing the chardonnay grape to Australia. Many of the surrounding wineries, including Poets Corner and Huntington Estate, are open to the public offering tastings and cellar door sales. Other local produce includes fine wool, honey, livestock and gourmet foods. The profusion of flora in the region attracts bees and several honey-processing companies have taken advantage of this, with different kinds of honey produced at various times of the year by skilled beekeepers. Mudgee Honey Haven, cnr Gulgong and Hargraves rds; and Mudgee Honey Company, 28 Robertson St, both offer tastings and sales. There are many National Trust buildings in the town and all can be seen on a self-guided historical town walk. A brochure is available from the tourist office. |

Gulgong, the town on the old $10 note is only 28km north of Mudgee. Around 130 buildings in this town are classified by the National Trust. The streets are narrow and there are many reminders of its goldrush glory days. The Pioneers Museum is in the heart of town and includes a re-created bedroom, blacksmith shop, kitchen and bakehouse. The museum at 73 Herbert Rd is open 9am-5pm, 7 days a week. The Henry Lawson Centre is located at 147 Mayne St, Gulgong and is a memorial to Henry Lawson's life. Windamere Dam, 24km SE is a popular fishing and watersports venue with camping facilities.
