DESTINATION: Macksville

Macksville

This Nambucca River town, only 10km upstream from Nambucca Heads, is a pleasant stop on your journey along the Pacific Hwy. Fishing and oyster farming are the main industries in Macksville. Crops grown in the surrounding district include bananas (the most southerly region where bananas are commercially grown) and other tropical fruit, macadamia nuts and vegetables. Grazing, dairying and timber are also important to the local economy.

Main Attractions

The Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage is a reminder of the settlement's early days. Stables on the property display tools, saddlery, harness and horse-drawn vehicles. The cottage is in River St and is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 2pm-4pm. Riverbank parks on either side of the Pacific Hwy bridge offer picnic tables. Boat launching ramps are also located on each side of the river. Macksville Wharf, a heritage project, was recently opened. The river provides ideal conditions for watersports and bottlenose dolphins are often seen swimming in these waters.
