DESTINATION: Kiama

Kiama

The centre of a rich dairying district, famous for its Illawarra shorthorn breed of cattle, Kiama is also a popular resort town. Located on the Princes Hwy, 119km south of Sydney, Kiama has a relaxed, country atmosphere as well as offering visitors excellent beaches, rockpools, fishing and a scenic rural hinterland.

Main Attractions

The famous Kiama Blowhole is a fascinating yet unpredictable attraction. In calm weather it is fairly unimpressive, but when the seas are rough and running from the south-east, trapped water is forced to a height of 60m, creating a loud noise and spectacular sight. The Blowhole is floodlit until 9pm. Kiama Family History (Genealogical) Centre and The Terrace (art and craft shops) are historic buildings that are worthwhile visiting. A variety of fish can be caught around the town's rocky shoreline and there are plenty of fishing charters available.

Saddleback Mountain can be reached by following the Jamberoo Rd from Kiama. The summit is 600m above sea level and views extend 240km along the coast and over farming land. The wonderful Minnamurra Rainforest and Rainforest Centre is close by in Budderoo NP which is also home to Minnamurra Falls.
