DESTINATION: Gloucester

This town lies in the sheltered valley of the Gloucester River and is surrounded by agricultural land ideal for beef and dairying. The main access road is the Bucketts Way, named after the unusual chain of hills known as The Bucketts that forms a backdrop to the town.

Main Attractions

Billabong Native Garden in Denison St has a diverse range of flora and is an ideal spot for picnics and BBQs. Maps describing the town's historic walk are available from the information centre. Insights into local history can be found in the Folk Museum. Housed in the old Council Chambers in Church St, the museum is open Thursdays, Saturdays and on Tuesdays in school holidays, 10am-2pm.

Gloucester is often considered the 'Base Camp of the Barringtons', making this World Heritage-listed national park worthwhile exploring from the town. The rivers and streams in the area provide some of the best canoeing in New South Wales. In the freshwater streams fish, including trout and perch abound. There are scenic drives and walks in the surrounding countryside and scattered throughout are picnic and camping spots, and a number of old timber and gold-mining settlements. In the 1870s, gold was discovered at nearby Copeland and the workings of the old Mountain Maid Gold Mine can be seen. There is a walking track from the car park.
