DESTINATION: Forbes

Forbes

The centre of a prosperous farming district, located on the Lachlan River, Forbes is a town of historic buildings, parks and gardens. This former gold-mining town is located near where bushranger Ben Hall was shot by police, in 1865.

Main Attractions

Forbes Historical Museum in Cross St (open daily 3pm-5pm) was once a music hall. A large exhibit is devoted to the bushranging days of Ben Hall. Gum Swamp Wildlife Sanctuary is 4km SW of Forbes on the Newell Hwy. Here it is possible to view 60 to 70 species of birds within a few hours. Lachlan Vintage Village (open daily, 8am-5pm) re-creates the community as it was in the late 19th century, with an emphasis on life in the goldfields. Ben Hall's cottage and the home of Henry Lawson are features. The cemetery, located in Bogan Gate Rd, has the graves of Ben Hall, Kate Foster (Ned Kelly's sister), and Rebecca Shields (Capt Cook's niece). Also worthwhile is a self-guided walk of the town's historic buildings, most of which are in Court and Lachlan sts. An historic buildings walk leaflet available from the information centre.
