Dubbo

Known as the 'Hub of the West', the rural city of Dubbo is a busy road, rail and air junction on the Macquarie River. The town is located halfway between Melbourne and Brisbane and just over 400km from Sydney. The surrounding areas support pigs, sheep, cattle stud farms and produce wheat, fodder, cotton, wool, fruit and vegetables.


Main Attractions

Dubbo Museum is located at 232 Macquarie St and is open daily, 12pm-4.30pm. Displays include Aboriginal artefacts and early farm, home and commercial memorabilia. The Dubbo Military Museum on the Newell Hwy is open daily, 9am-5pm. There is a good display of WWII memorabilia, and a Jurassic Supermaze hands-on science exhibit. Old Dubbo Gaol is a major attraction in the heart of the city. Open daily, 9.30am-4.30pm, this sandstone gaol was built around 1871 and operated until 1966 when it was turned into a museum. The Dubbo Regional Art Gallery has a permanent collection of works based on the theme 'Animals in Art', and presents regular touring exhibitions. Located at 165 Darling St, the gallery is open daily 12pm-4.30pm.

Nearby attractions

Western Plains Zoo is perhaps the best-known attraction in Dubbo. There are more than 800 exotic and native animals in open exhibits. You can walk, cycle or drive around the 6km of sealed road and walking trails. The National Trust property, Dundullimal is in the same area as the zoo. Guided audio tours describe the timber-slab farmhouse (1840), one of the earliest surviving squatter's homesteads in the country. The homestead is open daily, 9am-5pm.
