Hat Head NP is full of birdlife, with the wetlands and lagoons providing breeding grounds for several species of waterbirds. Inland, the dry, open forest provides ideal nesting conditions for falcons and hawks. The national park also comprises a coastal strip of high dunes. The park is popular for fishing, swimming, bushwalking, camping and picnicking. Many visitors walk to Korogoro Point to spot whales (in season). Aboriginal sites can be found in the area between Big Hill and Queens Head. An unsealed road links Crescent Head with Port Macquarie and gives access to these sites.
