DESTINATION: BerrimaThis historic town is located 14km south of Mittagong on the Hume Hwy. Still preserved as a village of the 1850s, Berrima offers the visitor many attractions. Main AttractionsA self-guided walking tour around the town is recommended. Leaflets describing the walk are available from the Court House. A guided walking tour can also be booked a day ahead. Buildings of interest include Berrima Court House, built in 1838. This Court House held the first trial by jury in New South Wales and now houses the information centre, which is open daily 10am-4pm. Displays include a sentencing session of a 19th-century trial and a video history of the town and district. Berrima Gaol, built in 1839, is across the road and is now a medium security facility and rehabilitation centre. Berrima Court House Museum displays local memorabilia and items of historic interest. Now a member of the worldwide Booktown organisation, the Petty Jury Bookshop, located in the museum, specialises in Australian history and has copies of antique maps. It is open weekends and holidays from 10am to 4pm. Holy Trinity and St Francis Xavier churches are worthwhile visiting. Berkelouw's Antiquarian Book Barn is located on the Old Hume Hwy and stocks over 200 000 rare and second-hand books. |
