DESTINATION: Albury

Albury

Sometimes known as only Albury, the real city is a conjoining of 2, Albury-Wodonga, and lies 575km SW of Sydney on the Murray River. Albury lies within New South Wales, while Wodonga, is on the Victorian side. The region was discovered by Hume and Hovell during their 1824 exploration, and Albury grew as an important paddlesteamer port in the heyday of the river trade. Today, the city serves a region rich in crops, cattle, wine and scenery. It is also a convenient stopover for those driving between Sydney and Melbourne.

Main Attractions

Points of interest include the many buildings dating from the late 1800s, such as the Turks Head Inn, which now houses Albury Regional Museum. The Albury Botanic Gardens were established on Bungambrawatha Creek over 100 years ago. The Regional Arts Centre features the locally made Aurora Australis tapestry, paintings, ceramics and photographs.

Ettamogah Sanctuary, north of Albury, is the place to view native wildlife. Further on at Table Top is the eccentric Ettamogah Pub, a living replica of Ken Maynard's cartoon, published in Australia Post in 1959. Opposite is the Table Top Winery, which is open for tastings and sales. For those interested in military matters, Bandiana Military Camp covers a considerable area on the south-east outskirts of Wodonga. A hangar-type building houses the RAA Ordnance Corps Museum, which displays tanks, armoured vehicles, uniforms, weapons and other paraphernalia. In the warmer months, the paddlesteamer PS Cumberoona cruises the Murray River.

Region: The Murray

The Murray River
by admin
Tumbling from its source in the High Country, the Murray is one of the world's great rivers, flowing through river red gum forests, wetlands teeming with birdlife, rich agricultural land and busy river towns. Explore the Murray from the paddle steamer capital of Australia, Echuca-Moama. From here you can take a cruise or hire a houseboat - paddle steamers and riverboats still pull into its historic wharf. Bask on the sunny shores of Lake Mulwala. Corowa, also has a colourful history associated with its role as a river port and the centre of agriculture in the region. Albury-Wodonga, roughly half way between Sydney and Melbourne, is a great base from which to explore the whole region. more
